At first glance, the 2nd Ankle looks like a typical ankle gauntlet. But looks are deceiving.
Simulating the physiology of the human body, the 2nd Ankle is flexible, with artificial tendons providing support exactly where the patient needs reinforcement.
A patient with posterior tibial tendon disorder can be fitted with a 2nd Ankle where its artificial tendon simulates the patient’s weakened tendon, providing exceptional support, while the rest of the shell remains flexible. This allows the orthosis to focus solely on the pathology with minimal side effects.
Typical ankle gauntlets cause collateral damage by restricting the motion of the foot and ankle in all three planes, placing pressure on the Achilles tendon, and causing spontaneous knee flexion at heel strike.
In addition, most ankle gauntlets are made of leather, which can absorb body fluids, causing potential pathogenic introduction to at-risk tissue.
The 2nd Ankle focuses directly on the patient’s pathology, allows for a normal gait and its material is hypo-allergenic.
Freedom Fabrication can create artificial tendons along any axis in the 2nd Ankle, depending on your patient’s specific pathology.
